Why We Are Here - SBHC Spotlight

This morning at breakfast, my 15-year-old surprised me. He sat down and said, “I know healthcare has become unaffordable, but I am really concerned that some people don’t even have a place to go.”

Me too, kiddo. That is exactly why Minnesota is working toward expanding School-Based Health Centers.

Rise Up Clinics is one of many health care organizations in Minnesota who operate these student-centered health centers inside of schools. One of their clinics is located inside of White Bear Lake Senior High and entitled “Bear Care Clinic.” Rise Up has also started a new school-based initiative at St. Paul City Schools. The Executive Director and lead care provider at Bear Care Clinic, Dr. Jessica Miehe, spoke to her community about their work with these words:

“We are here, so families don’t have to choose between healthcare and living costs.”

“We are here when you realize basketball tryouts are tomorrow and your child needs a sports physical today.”

“We are here when your child wakes up with a 102 fever, your clinic is booked, and the only other option is an expensive urgent care visit.”

“We are here so that high school kids can learn to navigate their own health – they can be seen during the school day and then return right back to class.”

Communities are looking for solutions that are affordable, accessible, and convenient. School-Based Health Centers are simply clinics that provide child and youth-centered care where kids spend time. SBHCs ease the burden of high costs and complex access on busy families, while improving the health of students and fostering positive school climate.

Thank you Jessica, for your trusted partnership and your work in the community!
